Spirituality vs Photography

Organised by the St Albans Centre for Christian Studies this was a first attempt to bring together those who wanted to explore spirituality through photography. Tutor Roy Gregory commented that he had had to work very hard to find resources – the monk Thomas Merton who used photography to illustrate his unique blend of Catholic mysticism and Buddhism.   And Jan Phillips whose book God is at Eye Level was used at least the chapter headings were – to introduce the topic.  For me the richest pickings of the morning was the discussion and work of those who came. We were sent to walk around Fleetville  for an hour to photograph whatever took our fancy. The creativity of what people returned with was wonderful – the more so because some were only using mobile phones, and one person even sketched what they would have photograhed if they had had a camera with them. The diversity and quality was impressive.  I hope this leads to something more permanent – it was a really powerful encounter – mercifully free from photography club bores. The last word should be left to Roy who thanked us all for showing him the part of St Albans where he lived in ways he had not imagined.
