The deskilling of politicians..

MP The government has announced that soon nurses will need a degree before they can nurse you. The professionalisation of the workforce proceeds apace. And a jolly good thing too. But no one is about to suggest that an MP needs a degree to be an MP – that would be elitist. The whole point of democracy is that just about anybody can be elected by just about everybody – Plato would have hated democracy – he wanted philosophers to run his republic because nobody else was competent.  But the enskilling of nurses does raise the question What makes a good MP? Does it remain their ability to represent their constituents. Are they capable thinkers, advocates, administrators? And how do we improve their skills?
