How to be original – and how to avoid being copied

Better than Free A year old article by Kevin Kelly of Wired Magazine – he was clearly looking across his office to Chris Anderson who must have been banging on about Free at that point. The web is a gigantic copier which makes everything free. So how to make a bit of money? And how to be original. Here are Kevin's 8 'generatives'

Immediacy

Personalisation

Interpretation

Authenticity

Accessibility

Embodiment

Patronage

Findability

You can read his piece to get the details. What I don't think he gets to grips with is how most of the time copies are quite enough. The world mostly goes round on copies – that is why the internet has been so successful. Put under enough pressure anybody will go for the copy instead of the original. That's why there's a problem.  What Anderson is also trying to address is why having lots of copies makes the original more valuable when you get aroun to selling it.
