St Anselms day April 21st

Saint Anselm once Archbishop of Canterbury, a favourite of mine who I suspect was a brilliant windup merchant with a terrific sense of humour.  Couple of quotes: “For I do not seek to understand that I may believe,
but I believe in order to understand. For this I believe – that unless
I believe, I should not understand.” Which should start all sorts of arguments.

Here's another: “If it can be conceived at all – it must exist.” from which comes his famous argument for the existence of God – I can imagine God so God must exist. Which people are still arguing about. Can existence be a quality which a perfect being possessing all qualities must have (otherwise that being could not be perfect)?

He was very public in his opposition to the Crusades forbidding his monasteries to send any monks along.

His philosophical writing and his prayers are written in direct and simple speech. Here's to Anselm. I gather St Johns Durham are holding a conference about his work in September of this year.  If I can find the space I'll try to be there.
