Don’t get hung by your own bootstraps..

SubvertingGlobalMyths  I've been reading Vinoth Ramachandra's book Subverting Global Myths – a systematic mugging of western sacred cows by a Sri Lanka based theologian. Very slowly because there's a lot in it. At present I am working through the chapter on the western myth of science. And found a lovely quotation by a banker of a quoter – GK Chesterton (Chesterton was used last week if you recall by the Malawian justice to explain why no Mercy was given to Madonna – "Before you take down a wall, find out why it was put up in the first place").

This is Chesteron on the migration of the biological theory of evolution to being a philosophical theory explaining everything: "Evolution is either an innocent scientific description of how certain earthly things came about; or if it is anything more than this, it is an attack on thought itself. If evolution destroys anything it does not destroy religion but rationalism." How is the intelligibility of the universe accessible to the human mind.  If religious explanations are absurd then so are so called meta-scientific ones. The bootstraps hang us all.
